An Extraordinary Festival
SAIL Amsterdam is not just another event. Held every five years, it attracts millions of visitors and transforms the Dutch capital into a gigantic floating stage. In 2025, the celebration will be even more special as it marks a triple anniversary: the 50th anniversary of the festival, the 10th edition, and the 750th anniversary of the city of Amsterdam. A unique coincidence that makes this edition truly symbolic.
The SAIL-In: a Spectacular Parade
The starting point of the festival is the famous SAIL-In, a grand parade taking place on August 20, 2025. Early in the morning, the ships depart from the port of IJmuiden and sail up the North Sea Canal to reach the IJ, in the heart of Amsterdam. The spectacle is breathtaking: hundreds of tall ships, historic vessels, clippers, and traditional boats advance in procession before the amazed eyes of spectators gathered along the quays. Each ship is welcomed with cannon salutes and the national anthem of its country, creating a festive and emotional atmosphere.
For sailing enthusiasts as well as casual visitors, it is a unique moment that sets the tone for the entire event. The luckiest can even board small boats and follow the fleet up close, experiencing the show from the inside.
Five Days of Festivities
After this triumphant opening, SAIL Amsterdam comes alive for five full days. The quays, canals, and harbor become the stage for countless activities, all linked to the maritime world. Visitors can not only admire the ships but also take part in creative animations, attend concerts, and soak up the unique atmosphere of a city completely transformed for the occasion.
Highlights include:
- The Crew Parade: ship crews march through the streets with music and colors, creating a festive and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
- The Grachtentocht: a parade through Amsterdam’s canals showcasing traditional boats and the city’s rich naval history.
- The Admiraalzeilen: a spectacular naval salute in honor of the Admiral of the Day, both solemn and symbolic.
- The Pieremachocheltocht: a quirky parade of small homemade boats crafted by locals, proving that SAIL also mixes humor and creativity.
