The Basilica of St. Agatha and St. Barbara in Oudenbosch is a unique Catholic building in the Netherlands. Built between 1865 and 1892 at the initiative of priest Willem Hellemons, it reproduces on a smaller scale the design and style of St. Peter’s Basilica for the nave and interior, while its façade is modeled after the Basilica of St. John Lateran.

A project inspired by Rome
Willem Hellemons, parish priest and former student in Rome, wanted to give Oudenbosch a place of worship worthy of the greatest Italian churches. Architect Pierre Cuypers designed the building, drawing inspiration from Roman Baroque monuments—a bold choice for a small village in North Brabant.
History and context
In 1868, Dutch Papal Zouaves and local faithful departed from Oudenbosch to defend the Papal States against the Italian nationalist army. In recognition, Pope Pius IX authorized the construction of a large basilica in this town. Initially a parish church, it was granted the title of minor basilica in 1912.
Remarkable elements
- A copy of Michelangelo’s Pietà.
- A baldachin inspired by Bernini’s at St. Peter’s.
- The Chair of St. Peter and the Gloria reproduced with great care.
- Frescoes and interior decorations in pure Roman tradition.
Relic of John Paul II
The basilica houses a piece of the cape worn by Pope John Paul II during the 1981 assassination attempt, displayed as a relic.
Visit and experience
The basilica, with its scale and ornamental richness, is striking when encountered in a modest town setting. A visit offers an architectural journey to Italy without leaving the Netherlands, with a solemn atmosphere and impressive artistic details.
