Originally built by Halewijn I in 1060, the fortress was modified and rebuilt several times over the centuries. In particular, it served as the residence of Ada van Holland, before losing its military role at the end of the 13th century as Leiden expanded around it.
Over the centuries, the Burcht became a patriotic symbol for the city, particularly after the famous Siege of Leiden in 1574. It is even depicted in historic stained glass windows in Gouda’s Janskerk church, testifying to its importance in the Dutch collective imagination.
Since 1651, the Burcht has been an integral part of Leiden’s urban fabric, first as a water reservoir, then as a public park. Access is via several gates decorated with heraldic symbols and Latin inscriptions, bearing witness to the city’s rich heritage. Today, the fortress offers a peaceful break in the middle of the city, while recalling the great hours of Leiden’s history.
