History

The Crane Hotel Faralda is housed in a former crane at the NDSM shipyard (crane number 13), built in the 1950s by the Hensen company. After the Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij went bankrupt in 1984, the crane remained unused for 25 years and was in danger of being demolished.

The initiative to save it came from real estate developer Edwin Kornmann Rudi, who obtained permission from the Amsterdam municipality in August 2011 to restore and convert the structure into a hotel. The restoration took place in 2013 in Franeker, before the crane returned to its original site in October of the same year.

The hotel was inaugurated on April 4, 2014. It houses three luxury suites and a jacuzzi installed at the top.

Architecture and special features

The restoration project required innovative technical solutions to adapt the crane to its new use. The tower containing the suites retains its ability to rotate around a central axis a few centimeters in diameter, through which all the electrical, water, and fire safety installations pass.

In 2016, Edwin Kornmann Rudi received the Pieter van Vollenhoven Prize for the preservation and rehabilitation of Dutch heritage.

Incident

On May 27, 2018, a tragic accident occurred when a 32-year-old man fell from the crane during a private party, resulting in his death.
