History and Inauguration
The concept of Micropia was imagined in 2002 by Haig Balian, director of the Royal Amsterdam Zoo Artis. It took more than a decade to bring this ambitious project to life. Micropia opened its doors to the public on September 30, 2014, and was inaugurated by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands.
A Historic Location
Micropia is housed in part of the Ledenlokalen, a historic building dating back to 1870 and belonging to Artis, located on Artisplein. This heritage setting adds a cultural dimension to the scientific immersion into the microscopic world.
An Immersive and Interactive Experience
Micropia offers a fascinating exploration through microscopes and giant screens that allow visitors to observe a multitude of micro-organisms live. A 3D microscope and a microbe scanner provide a playful and educational interaction with the public. In addition, a real microbial culture laboratory is visible through a glass wall, offering a unique immersive experience.
Micropia is aimed at anyone curious to discover the importance and unexpected beauty of the microscopic world.
