The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands, located in Amsterdam on Museumplein. A veritable treasure trove of Dutch art and history, it exhibits some 8,000 works from a total collection of one million objects and attracts more than 2.7 million visitors each year.
Founded in 1798 and located in Amsterdam since 1808, the Rijksmuseum has been housed in an imposing building designed by architect Pierre Cuypers since 1885. Combining Gothic and Dutch Renaissance styles, the museum is located in the heart of the museum district, on the famous Museumplein square.
The Rijksmuseum traces 800 years of Dutch art and society through more than 8,000 works on display. Among the highlights are Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, Vermeer’s The Milkmaid, and paintings by Frans Hals, Jan Steen, and Jacob van Ruisdael.
Between 2003 and 2013, the museum underwent a complete renovation. This transformation, both architectural and museological, modernized the spaces while preserving the charm of the original building. Since then, the museum has welcomed several million visitors each year.
The Rijksmuseum is not limited to its permanent collection. It also offers major exhibitions, such as those dedicated to Vermeer and Frans Hals, as well as research projects, conferences, and educational activities. The painting The Night Watch is even undergoing a public restoration that visitors can view.
In addition to its galleries, the Rijksmuseum has a garden, a shop, a library, and a Michelin-starred restaurant, RIJKS®. It is a must-see for anyone visiting Amsterdam.
