Description
The Zeeland Bridge (Zeelandbrug) connects the island of Schouwen-Duiveland to Noord-Beveland across the Oosterschelde. With its repeating silhouette and succession of arches, it’s one of the country’s most photogenic crossings.
A bit of history
Built in the mid-1960s and later inaugurated under the name “Zeelandbrug,” the structure replaced the former ferry link between Zierikzee and Kats. When it opened, it ranked among Europe’s most remarkable bridges for its length and technical boldness.
Architecture & key figures
The bridge stretches for about 5 km and rests on a regular series of prestressed concrete spans, complemented by a movable section for ship passage. Its carriageway accommodates cars, cyclists, and pedestrians in designated areas, making it both a practical and panoramic route.
Visiting experience
- Panoramic views: on one side the Oosterschelde, and to the north the vast IJsselmeer — guaranteed maritime vibes.
- By bike: the crossing is especially pleasant on days without strong winds; bring a windbreaker.
- Photography: sunrise or sunset highlights the graphic lines of the piers and spans.
Practical tips
- Access by road from Zierikzee (Schouwen-Duiveland) or Colijnsplaat (Noord-Beveland).
- Park near the bridgeheads to enjoy the viewpoints and access paths.
- In strong winds, the bike crossing can be demanding: adjust your route and gear.
